Mahmud was the ruler of Ghazni in Afghanistan. He heard of the wealth of Indian temples He attacked India seventeen times and carried away lots of gold, silver and precious stones. He built a strong room and stored all his wealth there

Mahmud had a poet named Firdausi in his court. He asked him to write poetry in his praise. The king promised the poet one gold coin for each verse in his praise. Firdausi wrote the book and named it ‘Shahnama, Firdausi used to read out the book in the court and the king was very pleased. But greed overpowered Mahmud’s promise. He went back on his words and ordered his minister to pay a copper coin for each verse to the poet.

The poet was very sad. He left the court in sorrow and went home. The treatment of a greedy king broke the poet’s heart. He felt dejected. He thought his labour of compiling the book had been wasted.

Firdausi wrote the final verse at the end of the book.

This verse brought to nothing all the praise of the king that was there in the book. The last verse depicted the king as liar, greedy and unworthy of being a ruler.

When the king came to know about it, he got worried. He felt sorry for the

fear of defamation. He sent a bag full of gold coins to the poet’s house. But as the king’s man entered the poet’s house, his beer was coming out. After the poet’s death, the king lost his peace of mind. He could not live for long and died after a year or two.

The greed of king Mahmud led to the disturbance of his mind and ultimately his death. Moreover, he ranks among the unworthy rulers of world history.
