Once upon a time, there lived a young, handsome Prince who wanted to marry a Princess, but she would have to be a real Princess. His parents suggested many girls to him. Some of them were beautiful, some attractive and charming, but he could not bring himself to accept any of them as his future wife.

 

One day, the Prince said to his mother, “I will ride through kingdom to kingdom and try to find a real Princess.” Early next morning, he rode away on the back of his horse in search of a real Princess. The Prince travelled to important cities, towns and villages which lay far beyond the boundaries of their own kingdom in hope of finding such a lady.

Though he met a number of Princesses of his stature, but it was difficult to decide whether they were real Princesses. None of them met the standards he had set for his real Princess. At last, he had to return home, disappointed.

One evening, a terrible storm came. There was thunder and lightning. The rain poured down in torrents. The King and Queen were having dinner with the Prince. Suddenly there was a knock on the gate of the castle.

 

“I think, there is someone at the gate, “said the King. The Queen and the Prince also heard the knocks through the claps of thunder and flashes of lightning. The King himself went out to open the gate.

 

He was amazed to find a beautiful girl standing outside the gate. She was dripping ‘ from head to feet. The water ran down from her hair and clothes. She was in a sad condition. The King led her inside the palace.

“Your Majesty!” said the girl, ” I am a Princess from a neighboring kingdom . Unluckily I was caught in this terrible storm. Being unable to return home, l has come to seek shelter here. “

 

But no one believed that she was a Princess as she was in a miserable state. She tried her best to convince the Queen and the Prince that she was a real Princess.

 

“I shall soon find out if she is indeed a real Princess, ” thought the Queen. She quickly hit upon a plan to find out if the beautiful girl was really a Princess.

The Queen took upon herself the responsibility of making a comfortable bed for the girl. She put a tiny green pea on the bed and then piled it up with twenty mattresses one upon another and twenty feather quilts over the mattresses on top of the pea. Even the servants were surprised as they could not understand what was happening.

She took the Princess to her bedroom. The heap of mattresses and the quilts was so high that a ladder had to be used by the Princess to reach the top. The Queen helped the young girl to go atop the bed.

 

That night, the Queen could not sleep at all. She was eager to find out if her plan had worked. Next morning, she got up rather early and went straight to the Princess ‘ bedroom. She had expected the Princess to be fast asleep. But lo and behold! The young girl was already up in the bed.

The Queen asked the Princess how she had slept. “I do want to sound ungrateful. I felt there was a bump so hard under the mattresses that I couldn’t have even a wink of sleep. I only kept tossing in the bed, “said the Princess.

Now the Queen knew that the girl was indeed a real Princess, since she could feel the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather quilts. Only a real Princess could have had such a delicate sense of feeling.

 

Finally, the Prince found his real Princess. They got married and lived happily ever after. The king ordered the pea to be kept in the royal museum for everyone to see and marvel at.
